La competencia lectora o reading literacy, según se establece en el estudio de PISA 2009, es la capacidad de “entender, usar, reflexionar sobre y comprometerse con el texto escrito para alcanzar objetivos personales, para desarrollar el conocimiento y el potencial individuales y para participar en la sociedad” en igualdad de condiciones, añado yo. Si la teoría dice que los sistemas educativos y la enseñanza de la lectura deben propiciar esa emancipación personal al servicio de la calidad de vida y de la participación igualitaria en los mecanismos de gobierno de la sociedad, lo cierto es que las estadísticas desmienten taxativamente, una vez más, esa vieja aspiración. No basta, dicho sea de paso, tal como escribía hace unos días en La lectura, la escritura y la emancipación, con aludir, como hace Ranciere, a una íntrinseca igualdad de las inteligencias, porque aunque compartamos con él el legítimo deseo de promover esa identidad, lo cierto es que la terca realidad nos demuestra una y otra vez que los hijos de padres con estudios superiores demuestran una competencia lectora muy superior a aquellos hijos de padres sin estudios que no les habituaron en su momento a la palabra escrita.
